POULTON CRICKET CLUB - NEWSLETTER 2001. ISSUE 1

Introduction

Well the Cricket season is just around the corner, so the Committee have in their wisdom decided to produce a Newsletter, this will go to press on a regular basis to keep everyone up to date with all the various activities that will be happening within and around the club. In this issue we have different members of the club writing a column along with some new features.

Should you have anything of interest that you would like to share please jot it down or telephone me. I shall also be contacting a player at random, by phone to feature in The Player Profile, be warned!

David Dunn - Chairman’s Report

So here we go again - another season. What’s new and different? Well actually, loads.

A new league and Second Team, a greater emphasis on the Youth Section and we’re close to the starting date for the new league with memories of the Full Monty at Stratton house still vivid. Allegedly, the Quartet have a whole season booked with Saga Holidays!

The club is running on a sound financial footing with a bank balance of nearly six thousand pounds plus Halifax Shares wroth approx £2,500.00. We shall spend part of this on a sight screen that is hopefully still small enough for Scott and myself to bowl from above it.

The First Team chart untried waters, but I expect the same from them as last year with our foreign contingent of Brett the Bok, Page the Aussie and Solly the Stroudite.

We must all back Graham Vinnicombe who, after just on year, has become a very popular member of Poulton and is now Second Team skipper. He has a very important role of blending together a side with experience and Youth - with the emphasis on bringing through the Youth to eventually kick out the whole of the committee into the second team ASAP on Merit.

The only grey note on the season so far is, due to increased workload, the artful dodger Richard Young cannot commit himself to the Youth as he did last year. We will miss Richard’s full on commitment, ideas and enthusiasm but maybe someone else will come through and help. I cannot stress this anymore. The Club has been asked by the County no less to be a leading light in the District. Their idea is to allow players and coaches from both Cirencester C.C. and Poulton to help coach the District Squad, those who haven’t quite made the County Squad and to assist in matches against the other Districts in the County. Over the years, other age groups will be brought through so the benefits to our Club will be enormous if we put in the hard work now and bring through these lads, Who knows? Five or six might even stick with Poulton C.C.

This year we are starting a Family Membership scheme to encourage the Youth section to bring along their parents and family to join in and hopefully actively take part in Sunday mornings. This extra revenue and help will be a great step forward for the Club.

In the meantime, see you all at nets and enjoy your cricket or I shall send that quartet around to your house for an encore. You have been warned!

Geoff Chapman - President

It may seem incredible that three years ago, the Cricket Club’s Committee decided to build an new pavilion. Little did we know then, the work involved before we could start to process of applying for grants.

We are extremely fortunate that Jane Lomas, the Chairman of Poulton Playing Field and Allotment Trust supports our applications. In December last year we were told by Sports England that in their opinion the Club is now in a position to apply for a grant.

To get to this point we have produced a Constitution for the Club, Rules of the Club, Membership Forms, an agreement between the Playing Field and Allotment Charity and the Cricket Club, three sets of plans for the pavilion, a specification for the pavilion obtained three quotations, met with CDC Planning Officials on two occasions, had three meetings with Mike Bailey, produced a Development Plan for the Club and finally attended three Sports England Workshops and a training evening.

Hopefully, we should agree budgets next week and then we can get down to the paperwork exercise of actually applying for grants. I will keep you informed of progress.

Andy James - Captains Log

CHAMPIONS! How do we top that this season? Well we have a bigger challenge this year than last, as we have entered a 2nd XI into local league cricket. Winning league championships are a fantastic bonus for the club but this decision of ours is far more important than any league title.

Graham Vinnicombe must have all our support, we must not fall into the common trap of two separate sides within a club, we all play for Poulton Cricket Club. With the pavilion plan’s going so well, this has to go hand in hand with the growth of both 1st and 2nd XI sides, these new facilities are what all Poulton players deserve, young and old!

As for the cricket, the 1st XI are now in Division 4 of the County League and I am totally convinced we can repeat the success of last year. The 2nd XI are in Division 3 of the Cirencester & District and I’m also sure we can have a success there to, too many of our members do not experience the challenge of league cricket so this will be a positive change, don’t get me wrong Sunday cricket has it’s place in our game but competitive 40 over games improve the standard of your cricket.

Once again, all the best to Graham with the 2nd XI and have a good season all.

Graham Vinnicombe - 2nd XI Skipper

I must admit to being nervous about the new season. Will we have enough players? What sort of standard is the Cirencester League? Will we win any games? I saw a business plan that Geoff Chapman put together for the lottery application and it shows promotion in successive seasons. We are going to need a lot of luck to achieve anything like this. Personally I see the establishment of a second eleven, with some regular players making up the team for most weeks, supplemented by irregular appearances from 1st eleven players looking to regain some confidence and a number of juniors, looking first to gain a regular second team place, but ultimately to be pushing the first eleven for their places.

Good luck to everyone for the season, let’s hope that we all score lots of runs and take loads of wickets.

Steve Willard - Team Secretary

My first year as Team Secretary was relatively stress-free, mainly thanks to the co-operation of all the Players letting me have your availability or non-availability in plenty of time. With two teams playing every Saturday this Season, your help is more important than ever. Availability must be given to me by 7pm on Mondays for the following weekend of Cricket. Team selection is made on Monday evenings and the Teams will be posted in the Standard as usual.

The Poulton C.C. website will also be up and running by the start of the Season and weekend line-ups should also appear here - more details to follow. Cry-offs must notify me as soon as possible to allow time to re-juggle the Teams. This is especially important this Year as both Saturday line-ups may be affected.

Finally I have a new contact telephone number this year - See the Fixture Card.

SHARPIES ANGELS

Please make note of the following diary dates:

CAR BOOT’S @ ENGLANDS - Sunday 6th May, Sunday 3rd June, Sunday 1st July & Sunday 5th August 2001.

FETE DAY - Saturday 1st September 2001. Once again can we ask everyone to keep this weekend free to help in what ever way they can, during the Friday evening and on the day - this is our main fund raising event of the year which keeps the club running and it is essential that every player is involved. We will be meeting regularly from now on, if you have anything that you would like to see or organise (a fresh idea perhaps) please chat to one of us - we would love to see more involvement from members. Quick Question - does anyone have access to large tents that can be used on the day?

TEA ROTA’S - These will be displayed in the Pavilion at the beginning of the season, obviously as we now have two Saturday teams this will mean a home game each weekend, if every player can take a turn at least once possibly twice throughout the season this would make light work for us all - it is good fun and you get lots of praise!!

Throughout the season we will keep you updated via the Newsletter of any social events, we hope to arrange one for early May, details in next issue.

WINTER TALES

Finally - as many of us have not kept in touch since late September I would just like to keep you updated with some happenings.

Andy James - Now looking lean and mean visiting the Gymnasium five nights a week. (I hear the female instructor is really putting him through it.) It’s certainly making him work up a thirst as he now classes three pints as a heavy drinking session where as previously it was two!

One Saturday afternoon in October I was sweeping the rainwater off my patio when to my surprise I saw Louise (Steve Willard’s young lady) in my neighbours garden. She said "I am house sitting the dog" then as if on cue out came Steve fumbling with is fringe - poor thing she had two to look after!!!

As most of you know Martin Sollis and Becky are getting married in March then Honeymooning in Kenya on an ALL INCLUSIVE. I sincerely hope the barman has stocked up the cellar accordingly. We all wish you a smashing day.

Mark Leadbeater aggravated his cruciate knee ligaments whilst doing some "Dirty Dancing" with Alison Greener at the New Years Eve Ball at the Ag College. You may well ask where the Lorraine and myself were - having a crafty smoke!

David Dunn our beloved Chairman has acquired two new employees for business, by coincidence one of them just happens to be a very useful batsman and the other is one of the best local bowlers in this area. Nice one Dave, if they don’t play for us then I suggest you withhold their monthly bonus.

I’m very sorry to hear Wayne Tinson had the dreaded "Yellow Spot" just after the end of last season. No not him personally but the outfield, fortunately with the help of a few chemicals the ground is looking as good as ever. Also anyone interested in lending a hand this season are most welcome especially any Charlie Dimmock lookalikes!
